So much more than birth support

My best friend got me thinking about having my first baby at home, but I was nervous about the idea. I'd been raised to believe that birth was a medical event that belonged in a hospital; the media always seemed to portray home births with tragic ends. I contacted an area midwife out of curiosity, and my husband and I ended up going in for an initial meeting where our concerns were more than eased by the three women we met that day. We left convinced that home birth was for us, a belief that was solidified at every visit after that for the entire pregnancy, and then cemented forever by the actual event. My midwife appointments were an hour long, and we felt our midwives really cared about us--and not just about the physical aspects of the pregnancy, but the emotional as well. They put the 15 minute OB visits I'd had initially to shame. My midwives made themselves available by phone 24/7 and talked me down from more than one anxious moment over the course of my pregnancy. They didn't just help me birth a baby, they helped us become a family. During the birth I felt surrounded by such loving, familiar support, I couldn't have felt any safer than I did. More importantly, because of all the time we'd had to get to know each other, I felt loved. Find an OB office that offers THAT. Postpartum home visits were a joy. I was heartbroken when we had to say goodbye. When I got pregnant again, I didn't hesitate to call on them. My second pregnancy brought us closer, and my second birth, with the same midwives assisting, was the single most amazing experience of my life. These women will be in my heart always.
