Our search for respect

Once the shock of being pregnant wore off I embraced this new life forming inside of me and I knew I had to do whatever I could to make sure (s)he had the best life possible. I had an appointment to confirm that I was pregnant then the OB came in the room, grabbed a needle, and told me to roll up my sleeve. I hesitated and asked why, he was very annoyed by this. He told me that I HAD to get a flu shot! I flat out told him no. When we left I already felt traumatized. Then I started thinking about my sister’s births… With her 1st she was induced and it ended in an emergency C-section. She was in and out of it for 3 days. She tried to breastfeed but the nurse told her that she wasn’t producing and gave the baby a bottle. I was only 18 at the time and clueless about the birthing process but I knew this whole experience was wrong! When she had her 2nd child her OB just signed her up for a C-section 4 weeks before the EDD since the OB was leaving for a vacation. Unfortunately the baby wasn’t ready and spent 3 days in the NICU. Again, I felt this wasn’t right. After I reflected on all of this I knew there must be another option. Then I remember seeing pictures on Facebook of a homebirth. I sent her a message, asked many questions then decided this was sounding more of what we wanted. I contacted the Midwife and after my first appointment with her I fell in love with her. I had so many options that at times I was very overwhelmed but my Midwife was always there to give me information on both pro’s and con’s on everything. She never gave her views unless asked. After my husband and I knew this is how we were going to give birth we had a lot of resistance from family and friends. Our midwife does a home visit at 36 weeks and encourages family members to come and ask questions. That was just wonderful! Once I knew I was actually in labor my husband called our Midwife to come over. At times I was very afraid not from a lack of care just that I had never done this before! We had our Midwife and two birth assistants there with us. They were so comforting and encouraging, which I needed. My husband was in the birthing tub with me through the whole process. As I took a mini break against my husband our son joined us. He was promptly placed on my chest. Thanks to our Midwife we were given the gift of a perfect birth. My husband and I laid in our bed with son and just. Our birth experience is the most cherished memory I have and our birth team has a special place in my heart.
